Shawn Mendes was about to be a dad. The “Stitches” singer revealed in his new song about his anxieties and an instance that might have changed his life forever.
Shawn Mendes released “Why Why Why” on August 9, 2024— the first single from his upcoming album Shawn coming out in October. The mellow guitar bristled song reflects on a turbulent relationship and how it affected the singer’s well being. In the bridge, Shawn sings “I thought I was about to be a father / Shook me to the core, I’m still a kid (Ooh) / Sometimes I still cry out for my mother / Why, why, why? Why, why, why?”

The song (understandably) shook the internet to its core as well. Many Shawn fans took to X writing, “SHAWN MENDES FATHER WHAT ????? #WhyWhyWhy” and “shawn mendes wdym you were about to be a father?????”
Other fans are curious about the identity of the person he almost got pregnant. “did shawn mendes just say he was about to be a father???? with who???” one fan wrote on X. One fan replied to that post with another theory, “idk if he actually meant like somebody was pregnant, maybe he meant he was so committed he thought that that relationship was like where he would become a father eventually.”
Even though he might not reveal who the song is about, Shawn Mendes does have an extensive dating history with some high profile celebrities. His longest on-and-off relationship was with singer Camilla Cabello. The artists first dated from 2019 to 2021 and briefly reunited in 2023. Shawn was also linked to Sabrina Carpenter in March 2023 and was rumored to be linked with his chiropractor Dr. Jocelyn Miranda since February 2023.
In an upcoming interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Shawn said that writing the song “Why Why Why” and the rest of the album felt very natural. “There was something anthemic about those words,” He added, “It almost felt like a cry. It felt like … I don’t know. It just felt powerful and beautiful.”
