Does the L’Oreal Skin Ink Foundation Concealer Deliver on its Big Claims?

The new L’Oreal Skin Ink Foundation Concealer makes some of the boldest claims I’ve seen yet: up to 48 hours of waterproof, sweat proof, humidity proof and transfer resistant wear while feeling undetectable. Yes, they specifically use the word undetectable. The brand also promises the formula won’t cake or crease on the skin, and will last until you decide to remove it— no primer or setting needed.

I mean, in theory, that sounds like everything I need in a foundation and concealer, especially living in Las Vegas in the summer. While we don’t deal with humidity, we are no strangers to sweat in triple digit weather. I hate wearing heavy makeup in the summer, but still seek products that can offer coverage for my dark spots and blemishes.

First off, we need to talk about the shade range. There are 22 shades but not one that matches me perfectly. While the options includes neutral, cool and warm undertones, the neutral shades are on either side of the spectrum with only one neutral medium that’s too dark for me. 130 matches me the closest, but also dries down very pink on me compared to my neck and chest.

The L’Oreal Skin Ink formula is incredibly thin and lightweight. The coverage does start out pretty light, and it sets into a matte finish. This is a formula you must blend quickly. It dries down so fast, and once it’s set, you don’t want to touch it too much more.

It’s designed to be worn as either a concealer, a foundation, or both. I opted for testing it all over the face, especially because the shade didn’t match me perfectly.

Because it sets on the skin so quickly, I find it difficult to build up coverage. If you’re trying to layer up the product, and the first layer starts to dry as you’re adding more, you risk pulling the set foundation out of place. Honestly, I actually disagree with the brand’s “buildable coverage” claim.

As someone with pretty unbalanced combo skin, I was nervous about the matte finish. My t-zone gets super shiny, but I have dry areas around my hairline and mouth.

This is not a blurring formula, and to be fair, it doesn’t claim to be. Any texture on your skin will be on display once its dried down, and it didn’t do too many favors for my pores. I did find it to accentuate some dry spots in a way that made me a bit self conscious. Also, it has a tacky feel to it that doesn’t full go away.

Because of the issue blending and layering, I feel like I max out at medium coverage, which is just enough for me to feel evened out. But, the coverage stays intact all day, even through a (hot) hot girl walk outside in 98 degree heat. In fact, sweat seemed to make the foundation look a little better on my skin— sort of melting it in and smoothing out some of the textured areas. However, it did transfer out of place on my walk under my sunglasses (at the bridge of my nose) and where my hat touched my forehead.

But it’s definitely smudge proof and waterproof. Rubbing at the foundation either wet or dry won’t cause streaks, smudges, or fading.

I was also highly shocked that there was no creasing, even in my deeper expression lines like my laugh lines and between my brows. I really struggle to keep foundation and concealer smooth in those areas without heavily powdering, and even then sometimes I’m left with creasing and separating. This was probably the biggest highlight of the wear test for me.

Honestly, this foundation concealer looked best around my oily areas: my forehead, the cheek area on either side of my nose, and under my nose. It looked fresh, smooth and flexible. I can pretty confidently say that this formula is going to work best with oily skin. Results may vary with normal to combo skin, and you will probably hate it if you have dry skin. Additionally, because it’s so crease-proof and doesn’t settle in lines, it could work as a great under eye concealer for people who prefer a matte finish.

The last point I’ll leave you with: this tube only has half an ounce of product inside, which is about half your typical foundation. For $15-19 (depending on where you get it), this is basically priced similarly to— and in some cases, higher than— high end foundations. Especially with how much I had to apply to achieve the coverage I like, I feel like I would go through this quickly with everyday use.

Personally, this product isn’t for me. I don’t like the matte finish all over my face– or as an under eye concealer, for that matter– and it’s finicky to work with as part of a regular routine. However, if you have very oily skin and struggle with keeping product from creasing, then this may be what you’ve been looking for.
