Anne Hathaway’s Pixie Cut & The Princess Diaries Curls Are Back

As Hollywood’s sweetheart and the Valentino muse, Anne Hathaway is always setting the bar high when it comes to looks. After making her debut in The Princess Diaries, it’s safe to say she’s become a princess to fashion lovers everywhere. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of watching her style evolve. Personally, I get nostalgic thinking about Anne Hathaway’s pixie cut circa 2012. At the time, 30 year old Anne revolutionized the short haircut, and since then every celebrity under the sun has been trying to achieve her level of chic by adopting the hairstyle. (And respectfully, no one’s been able to.)

Since 2012, Anne has left her pixie cut era behind—and I have to admit, I’ve fallen in love with her long hair era just the same. In recent years, she’s brought us iconic looks like her hot pink sparkly Valentino number in 2022 (she did Barbiecore before Barbiecore was a thing BTW), and just this month, her quiet-luxury Gap shirtdress. And even though she’s been feeding us well, I always secretly wondered if she would ever bring back her signature pixie cut. Thankfully for the Anne Hathaway pixie cut stans, I have good news.

For her V Magazine China cover, Anne Hathaway brought back two iconic hairstyles from her past: Her carefree Mia Thermopolis frizzy curls and her 2012 shaggy pixie cut. Whether it was her intention or not, she just paid homage to her past looks in a huge way. And for us Anne Hathaway loyalists, it feels like a full circle moment to see her earliest hair moments reimagined on the pages of a magazine. Maybe this is her way of acknowledging her past eras—all while starting a new one.

Even though this might be a faux pixie cut and the Mia Thermopolis curls will inevitably fall, at the very least, it’s been fun to reminisce about our favorite Anne Hathaway hair moments. Over time, Anne has gained a monumental reputation as the couture darling of Hollywood. And these hair looks have not only reminded us of where she came from, but how she got here. Because she might be Valentino’s muse, but to a lot of us, she’s still our Mia Thermopolis.
