IF you can’t wash your hands, hand sanitizer it is.
Don’t panic you can make your own at home with ingredients you most likely already have!
The hand sanitizers you buy in the store is not a complex formulation, the active ingredient “ethyl or isopropyl rubbing alcohol 70%” this is all you need along with some water and measuring tool to make your own.
8oz hand Sanitizer recipe/formula:
You will need one glass liquid measuring pitcher or cup (think baking, Pyrex glass pitcher, it is probably already in your kitchen cabinets)
One 8oz empty clean bottle. Tip, if you chose to use aloe vera gel in your recipe you will want a pump bottle, if you opt for water then you will want a bottle with a spray top.
3/4 cup of 70%-90% Rubbing Alcohol, Ethyl or Isopropyl alcohol 70 % (At least 60% alcohol by volume)
1/4 cup vera gel or water
Optional:
2-6 drops of Essential Oil
¼ tablespoon Vitamin E Oil
I like to use essential oils to obtain natural fragrance and color in my cosmetic formulations as oppose to dyes and synthetic fragrances.
Many essential oils are known for their super hydration properties such as rose and Vitamin E oil will help keep your hands hydrated, often your hands become dry from the alcohol in the sanitizer.
Add 2-6 drops of Essential oil into the alcohol and aloe vera gel or water mixture, put the top on and give a little shake.
Lavender and rose essential oils are nice and calming fragrance, but I prefer a refreshing citrus scent like lemon or tangerine essential oil.
I do not recommend peppermint or oregano essential oil as those can irritate the hands.
Add ¼ tablespoon Vitamin E oil, top on, little shake and spray or pump away.
I opted for water and add lemon essential oil and Vitamin E oil for my hand sanitizer.
Label bottle ‘Hand sanitizer Alcohol 7-5” with sharpie or label maker.
Discard glass measuring pitcher for kitchen baking use or label “alcohol use” to keep for future hand sanitizer recipes.
I timed myself and it took me 5 minutes start to finish for my own hand sanitizer spray! Enjoy!
