What Are Retinol Serums?
Retinol serums are skincare products containing retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, that promotes skin cell turnover and collagen production. These serums work by increasing the rate at which skin cells regenerate, leading to improved skin texture, reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and a more even skin tone. Retinol also helps unclog pores, making it beneficial for those with acne-prone skin, too.
Is It Proven To Work?
Studies have shown the efficacy of retinol in improving overall skin condition. One study found that topical formulations containing 0.15% and 0.3% retinol significantly improved skin condition after 8 weeks of use. Participants experienced improvements in skin colour, hydration, and radiance, with a decrease in the number of wrinkles and skin discolouration, too.

How Do You Apply It?
When it comes to applying retinol, it’s essential to start slowly and gradually increase usage. For beginners, it’s recommended to use a small amount (pea-sized) of a low-concentration retinol product once or twice a week, gradually working up to more frequent use as your skin adjusts. Always apply retinol to clean, dry skin in the evening, as it can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight. Follow these steps for optimal results:
Cleanse and dry your face thoroughly.
Apply a pea-sized amount of retinol serum to your face, focusing on areas of concern.
Gently massage the product into your skin until fully absorbed.
Follow with a moisturiser to minimise potential dryness or irritation.
In the morning, cleanse your face and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
For those with sensitive skin, try the sandwich or buffering method: apply a layer of moisturiser, then the retinol serum, followed by another layer of moisturiser.
