I’ve begrudgingly cleaned many litter boxes because of the trade-off of having an excellent, cuddly companion for the past 15 years. Seems well worth the daily poop scoop.
I will admit, however, that over the years, we’ve accumulated more cats than litters I am happy to clean. Alas, they have an essential purpose on our farm. Not only do they provide endless hours of cuddly entertainment, but they also keep the rodent population in check so that our chickens, ducks, turkeys, and sheep receive all the grain intended for them.

As the weather turns cold in our Canadian climate, this tends to cause problems as most cats spend their time indoors, curled up by the fire, in our basket of mittens. More mitten time leads to more litter time indoors, and after three seasons of the great outdoors as their primary litter box, things get a little cramped in the winter.
It’s imperative to have a clean cat space and that our litter boxes remain as clean as possible to prevent any cat from finding a new spot that is not their assigned litter box.
I’ve tried clay-clumping, scent-free, heavily scented, and crystal litter…. you name it, it’s been in our boxes. Most of the time, the litter releases a smell that isn’t clean, but it attempts to mask the underlying urine and feces smell. If it’s not fooling us, it’s certainly not fooling the cats who have to paw around in it to use the bathroom.
Speaking of pawing around, other litters distribute a cloud of chalky dust when poured, cleaned, or used. When I opened Boxie® Extra Strength Clay Cat Litter, I first noticed the complete lack of smelly dust. While pouring, the litter makes a fraction, if any, of the dust cloud that wafts out over other litters. To test this theory further, I split the Neakasa M1 Automatic Cat Litter Box down the middle, wiping clean the side of Boxie® litter, compared to a store-brand litter. When the Neakasa began to rotate to clean the litter, the litter barely left a mark where it had been poured and didn’t release any disturbed dust.
Instead of a potent fragrance-filled litter that attempts to mask the smell of the litter, Boxie® is scent-free. While in use, the litter encapsulates the litter that smells until it’s time to tidy it up.
I primarily use clay-clumping cat litter, so all of my cats were familiar with the small pebbles of clay; however, I did note that Boxie® granules are smaller than other brands, which could benefit cats familiar with outdoor areas.
Our litter boxes and trays are typically in our basement for privacy and to ensure the four litter trays we keep are discrete, so I can’t say how often each cat uses which box, as I clean them regularly, and they are all used between the five. I’ve kept the Boxie® litter upstairs for this trial and I’ve noticed multiple uses (though I haven’t caught anyone in the act yet – they really like their privacy!), The important part that I can tell you is that it’s being used and liked by both myself and my cats.
