In 12 years of working at a Red Lobster in Pueblo, Colorado, Jose Romero has unloaded more lobster shipments than he can count. As the restaurant’s longtime dishwasher, Jose is always the one in charge of unpacking the lobsters. However, on July 12, he encountered something he and most people had never seen: an incredibly rare and vibrantly colored orange lobster.
Kendra Kastendieck, the general manager of Pueblo Red Lobster, has been overseeing the seafood eatery for about a year, but her experience in the restaurant industry spans two decades. Despite her extensive background, she had never encountered an orange lobster, and her director, with 10 years of experience at Red Lobster, had never seen one.
Pueblo, situated about 44 miles south of Colorado Springs and 114 miles south of Denver, is an unlikely place for such a rare discovery. “Everybody knows the blue lobsters because they make such headlines and they’re so brilliant in color, but those are only one in 2 million. The orange ones are one in 30 million,” Kastendieck explained. “So we thought that was extra cool when it came into the restaurant.”
The orange lobster was never intended for sale. Instead, Kastendieck and her team focused on finding the rare creature a permanent home at a local zoo or aquarium. Fortunately, the search for a suitable home was brief. Representatives from the Downtown Aquarium in Denver confirmed to the Pueblo Chieftain that they had accepted the lobster, which was being transported to its new home that very day.
In honor of its unique color and the location where it was found, the staff at the Pueblo Red Lobster gave the lobster a fitting name: “Crush.” This name pays homage to the legendary Denver Broncos “Orange Crush” defense of the late 1970s.
Crush’s story highlights an extraordinary event in a routine job. From the moment Jose Romero unpacked the shipment to the lobster’s relocation to the Downtown Aquarium in Denver, Crush’s journey captured the attention and admiration of many.
This rare find excited the Pueblo Red Lobster and the broader community, underscoring the marvels of nature and the surprises it can bring. Crush now resides in his new home at the aquarium, where visitors can marvel at his rare and stunning orange coloration. He is a living testament to the unexpected wonders that can appear in routine tasks.
