Quality: 5/5

Ingredients: 5/5
Value: 5/5

The perfect dog treat, in my opinion, is one made of all-natural ingredients and one that tastes so good my dogs drool when they hear the bag open. A treat that lasts more than a few seconds, is a major plus, too.
When I stumbled upon Farm Hounds treats, I was optimistic that I had found a company with the same definition of “perfect dog treat” that I had. What I didn’t expect was that Farm Hounds would deliver even more with their version of perfect.
Each of the wholesome, raw, dehydrated chews and treats this company produces contains just one all-natural ingredient. From turkey gizzards to bison ears, what it says on the package is the only thing you’ll find in the bag. Even better? Each of these treats is sourced from family-owned farms, the name of which appears right on the label.
I was a big fan of Farm Hounds after seeing how much my pets loved their treats. But after researching the company for this article, I became even more of a Farm Hounds devotee. There is just so much to love about this company and their products.

About Farm Hounds

The name of this treat company was inspired by the happy hounds the founders saw when visiting their local farms to find fresh, humanely raised meat for their new treat company. They wanted to find a way to provide dogs everywhere with the high-quality nutrition and joy those dogs had. From this, Farm Hounds was born.
Who Makes Farm Hounds Treats and Where Are They Produced?
Every chew, topper, and treat from Farm Hounds is sourced from a single family-owned farm in the USA. They work exclusively with these farms because they know they employ sustainable farming practices and humane husbandry techniques. And because these farms produce consistent quality and highly nutritious products.
These small family farms span the country, from Pitman Farms in Sanger, California, to Southwest Bison in Amarillo, Texas. All the treats are dehydrated and packaged in Farm Hounds’ kitchen in Georgia.
Which Types of Pets Is Farm Hounds Best Suited For?
Most Farm Hounds treats are made for dogs who like to chew. They have hard chews as well as softer options so that dogs of all ages can enjoy this age-old pastime.
In addition to chew treats, the company also makes meal topper powders loaded with extra nutrition and flavor, high-value training treats, and long-term chews. This is to say, there is likely to be something here for just about any dog.
And don’t let the name fool you, Farm Hounds isn’t just for hounds. My cat loves these chews and will come running along with the dogs whenever I open a bag.

Key Features

Farm Hounds isn’t your typical dog treat company. From what goes into their treats to where the ingredients come from, they do everything they can to support dogs, dog owners, and farmers. Here, we’ll look at the ingredients in each treat, where they are sourced, the different flavors and texture options, and other offerings from this company.
What’s In Them
Generally, when it comes to pet treats, the conversation about ingredients is a rather lengthy one. That is not the case with Farm Hounds.
That’s because each of their treats contains just a single ingredient. Their rawhide chews, for instance, are made from 100% beef hide. There are no added fillers, preservatives, or colors.
The key to that super short ingredient list is in how these treats are processed. Each is made by dehydrating the raw product slowly over low heat. This process preserves all the wonderful flavors, nutrients, and enzymes in the treats so your pet gets all the good without any of the bad.
Where They Come From
Farm Hounds was born out of a partnership with a single farm in Georgia called White Oak Pastures. The founders loved the idea of forming a tight relationship with a family farm because it helped guarantee the quality of their product while also supporting a better way of farming.
Today, Farm Hounds has dozens of partnerships with farms across the country. Each of these family-owned farms engages in humane practices, including allowing their animals access to open pastures and environments where they can engage in natural behaviors. They also use regenerative farming practices to help combat climate change and preserve healthier soil for future generations.
Each bag of treats contains the name of the farm where the meat was raised right on the bag. This way you know where the treats came from and can give credit to the devoted farmers who made it possible.

Textures and Flavors
Every product from Farm Hounds is dehydrated in its raw, unprocessed form. But this doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of flavor and texture options to choose from.
For dogs who like a little crunch, the turkey gizzards, jerkys, and many of the organ meat options work well. For something a little easier to chew, the strips, which come in many flavors, are a good choice.
If your dog needs something to keep them occupied for more than a few minutes, the all-natural rawhide rolls are perfect. And for young puppies and seniors without many teeth, the beef lung and liver have the perfect soft and chewy texture.
Most treat options are available in bags or in bulk. You can also sign up for one of their subscription boxes to get multiple products delivered as often as needed.
Beyond Chews
In addition to their chew treats and rawhide rolls, Farm Hounds also offers powdered meal toppers. These are available in three flavors:

Elk Antler Sprinkles – Great source of calcium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc. Made from naturally shed antlers collected from the mountains of Colorado.

Leftover Sprinkles – This powder is created from scraps leftover from treat making. Choose from pork, chicken, duck, beef, and turkey, and a variety of organ and muscle meat options.

Blood Sprinklers – Choose from beef or chicken. They’re a great source of iron, protein, and flavor!

These sprinkles are a great way to add extra nutrition and flavor to your dog’s meals. And they are a wonderful way to support local farmers and ensure there is no waste in the treat-making process.
Farm Hounds also carries a line of training treats made from their dehydrated jerky chews.

Reviews of the Natural Chews and Treats We Received
1. Beef Lung

These soft and chewy treats from Farm Hounds are perfect for older dogs, gentle chewers, and young puppies. They come in irregular long strips that are easy to chew and break apart.
Where many dehydrated chews break off with sharp edges, these ones tear apart with soft edges. This means excited chewers are less likely to get a jagged piece caught in their throat as they gulp it down.
Like other organ meats, lung makes a highly palatable, high-value treat.
My bag of Beef Lung was sourced from Thousand Hills farm in Becker, Minnesota. This family farm is dedicated to holistically grazing their cattle and using regenerative farming practices to protect the soil and the planet.
Each of these chews contains over 70% protein and 15% fat. And they are loaded with natural vitamin B12, selenium, and iron.
These are a favorite of my 15-year-old Chihuahua, Papyrus, who has missing teeth and less patience for chews than he used to.

Soft texture for easy chewing

Doesn’t break into sharp pieces

Highly palatable

Good for seniors

Humanely raised

Can be eaten very quickly

2. Turkey Gizzards

If your dog likes the traditional slim-jim-type jerky treats but you want an option with better ingredients, I highly recommend the Turkey Gizzards from Farm Hounds.
These jerky chews have a similar shape and size as those other chews, but are made with far superior ingredients. They contain only raw, dehydrated turkey gizzards.
Compared to those filler-filled, unnatural jerky chews, these are quite a bit crunchier. But they’re also fairly thin, which makes it easy for even little jaws to break them apart.
My bag of gizzards came from Pitman Farms in Sanger, California. This family-owned poultry ranch has been in operation since 1954. All of their birds are free-range, with access to lush, green pastures.
Each of these chews contains about 80% protein and 9% fat. They can easily be broken up and used as training treats. Turkey gizzard is high in vitamins B12, A, and E, as well as iron.
These tasty chews are my cat’s favorite. It takes him a decent amount of time to get through them, but the skinny shape is perfect for his little mouth.

Crunchy texture

Super high in protein

Easy to break apart

Free-range turkey

Perfect shape for big and small dogs

Neutral smell makes them less enticing

3. Beef Kidney

These flat Beef Kidney treats are super versatile. You can feed them whole for a crunchy treat that takes a bit of time to get through. Or you can break them up and use them as trainers or traditional treats.
They have a nice crunchy texture, but because they are flat and thin, they are easy enough for even old dogs to chew up. They also have a reasonably potent odor, which my dogs love.
My bag of Beef Kidney jerky came from Thousand Hills farm, just like my other beef treats. They are made from 100% free-range cattle that are humanely raised.
With a higher fat content, these treats are great for dogs who need extra energy or to put on a few pounds. Each chew contains 64% protein and 17% fat. Kidney is a great source of iron, vitamin B12, vitamin A, and vitamin E.
My 13-year-old Dalmatian mix, Ragz, loves these chews. She had multiple molars removed years ago and has few teeth left to chew with. But she has no problem getting through these thin chews.

100% free-range beef

High in fat

Enticing aroma

Crunchy, thin texture

Easy to break apart

Pieces can have sharp edges

Our Experience With Farm Hounds
Both my dogs used to be ravenous chewers. They’d devour bully sticks, de-meat raw bones, and happily test any other kind of chew I offered. But now that they’ve gotten older and lost some teeth, it’s been harder to find chews they can handle.
When I saw Farm Hounds’ huge selection of dehydrated chew treats, I was certain I could find something that would work for them. I ended up with the Turkey Gizzards, Beef Kidney, and Beef Lung, three products I hoped would be soft enough or thin enough for them to chew easily.
The moment the box arrived, they were interested. So was my one-year-old cat, Makoa, an avid chewer himself.
I handed out the chews at random and was happy to see that everyone seemed thrilled with their selection. And I was happy to see that each bag came with a decent amount of chews.
There is no question that my pets like these treats. They sit by the shelf in the pantry and beg for them whenever they can. And I love that these treats are all-natural and made with only one raw ingredient.
But it wasn’t until I started looking deeper into the company that I really fell in love with Farm Hounds. It’s not often that you find a dog treat business that is just as concerned with supporting family farms and sustainable agriculture as they are with providing nutritious, quality treats.
I love that Farm Hounds prints the source farm of each product on their bags. You can even go to their website and learn more about their partners and what they are doing to employ regenerative farming practices.
Given all you get in a bag of Farm Hounds chews—quality dehydrated jerky sourced from family-owned US farms—you might expect to pay a premium. But these treats don’t cost much more than I pay for the same amount of questionable quality chews from unknown origin at the feed store.
For all you get with these awesome chews, and all they give in terms of sustainable farming support and high-quality nutrition, I cannot recommend Farm Hounds treats enough.

Conclusion
If you’re looking for a better chew for your dog (or cat!), Farm Hounds is a wonderful place to look.
This company offers dozens of different chew options from standard chicken jerky to exotic hairy rabbit hide. They have textures and shapes for pets of all ages. And, best of all, each option includes only one all-natural ingredient that is sourced from local family farms and dehydrated raw to retain all the goodness your pet needs.
