Maybelline Grippy Serum Primer Review & Swatches

Maybelline Grippy Serum Primer ($12.99) is a new hydrating gripping primer that promises to extend the wear of foundation up to 24 hours. This is unlike the popular and cult-favorite Milk Hydro Grip formula, E.L.F. Jelly Pop Dew Primer, and E.L.F. Power Grip Power as instead of a gel it’s an serum consistency. Maybelline Grippy Serum Primer not only promises to extend the wear of your foundation but also, plumps up skin and contains 2% niacinamide.
I was intrigued by the fact this is a serum and it was part of the reason I purchased it. The other reason is because I swear by gripping primers and absolutely love them. I do think there are two sides in the gripping facial primer world though. There’s the side that I’m on that absolutely loves these formulas and there’s the side that hates them and finds them too sticky or tacky. Personally, I love them and think they really work and do extend the wear of your foundation! That being said not all gripping primers are created equal and a few of the newer formulas like Covergirl TruBlend Skin Enhancer Sticky Grip Primer have been disappointing!
Let’s take a look at my Maybelline Grippy Serum Primer review below!

Maybelline Grippy Serum Primer arrives in a 1 oz glass clear glass bottle with a dropper for easy application. It’ll set you back around $10-$13 depending where you purchase it which is equivalent to the 1 oz size of E.L.F. Power Grip Primer which is $10 and also, 1 oz in size. I actually really do like the packaging. I have my little youTube moment in the morning dripping this on my face like a little weirdo. It’s oddly satisfying. That being said, I am worried I’ll drop it as it is glass and I’m clumsy!

I have drier skin and my skin absolutely loves this formula. It’s a thin runny serum that feels refreshing, absorbs easily, and feels lightly hydrating. Initially it feels like I’ve just applying a serum. It absorbs fast and nothing really happens after that. I learned after using it a few times I need to wait before applying my makeup. This needs about ten or fifteen seconds before it starts to become sticky. I actually like dripping a few drops on my face and just leaving it there for a few seconds. After a few seconds I’ll pat it into place and that’s when it becomes lightly tacky. This isn’t as tacky or as sticky as Milk or E.L.F.’s formula. This is a good thing if you hate how tacky those are as you might find this a better option! That being said, it’s still tacky enough to grip foundation. It creates a really nice, soft base for your foundation. I feel like my foundation applies easier and smoother when I use this under it. I experienced no pilling issues and my foundation was super smooth on top of it. And yes, it extended the wear on any formula I used be it liquid, cream, or serum foundations. All worked great with this and I got a good two to three hours more wear from them versus when I wasn’t using Grippy Serum Primer. It also, left my skin feeling plush, plumped, and nicely hydrated through the day. Typically, I have a little bit of foundation cracking and flaking around the sides of my nose and this prevented that beautifully. It’s fragrance-free with absolutely no weird scent to it.

As for the skincare part of the deal I’m not really sure. I’ve only been using this a short amount of time and I can’t really say if the niacinamide is actually doing anything. As I get older I become less impressed with makeup products that contain skincare. That being said, the addition of is niacinamide but not really necessary in my facial primer.
I happen to be a die hard Jelly Pop Dew Primer girl and I love NYX Plump Right Back Primer and I can see Maybelline Grippy Serum Primer becoming part of my daily routine. I tend to switch between those two formulas and Maybelline will be added in as it’s quickly becoming a fav formula of mine.
If you love gripping primers I think Maybelline Grippy Serum Primer will be a formula you adore! Maybelline Grippy Serum Primer is available now. Have you tried it? What did you think of the formula?

Maybelline Grippy Serum Primer ($12.99) is a new gripping priming serum that promises to extend the wear of foundation as it hydrates and treats skin with a 2% niacinamide. It arrives in a glass bottle with a dropper for easy application. As I mentioned above I’m not really sure if the niacinamide is doing anything in this formula and as nice as it is to have it in the primer it isn’t really necessary for me. I’d rather just have my skincare doing the heavy lifting and not my facial primer. That being said, the primer formula itself is excellent. It’s thin, runny, quick absorbing, and fragrance-free. I found letting it sitting on skin a few seconds before foundation application makes it a bit more tackier. It creates a very smooth base for foundation and doesn’t have any pilling issues. It keeps my skin lightly hydrated during the wear and I felt like my skin felt plumped and plush when wearing it under my foundation. And yes, it absolutely extends the wear of a variety of different foundation formulas by two to three hours more than when not wearing.Aqua / Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, PEG-150 Distearate, Niacinamide, Polysorbate 80, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Panthenol, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, Ascorbyl Palmitate (F.I.L. Z70051981/2).

Affordable.
Cool packaging.
Leaves skin smooth and lightly hydrated.
Great base for foundation to adhere to.
Extends the wear of foundation.
No fragrance.

Glass bottle is cool but a little concerning if dropped on a bathroom floor.

Maybelline Grippy Serum Primer is easily a great pick for anyone that enjoys gripping primers!
