With the rainy season just around the corner, there is no more timeless option than a trench or car coat. Personally, I’m obsessed with my classic Burberry trenches and a late 90’s Maritne Sitbon car coat. Both are undeniably great investments and staples that have stood the test of time.
While I’ve always been a fan of the iconic trench coat, there are times when it’s traditional design, a double-breasted front, plethora of buttons and epaulet details, can feel a bit too much! The long sweeping silhouette, while stunning, doesn’t always suit every occasion.
That’s where the car coat steps in as the ultimate alternative. Sleek and minimalist, the car coat offers a refreshing, slightly less formal twist on outerwear. Its single-breasted design, paired with a flattering A-line shape, delivers an effortlessly sophisticated look. This piece isn’t just for driving or rainy days; it’s a true wardrobe chameleon. Whether draped over an evening dress or paired with jeans and a simple tee, the Car Coat remains incredibly relevant whilst providing the balance between refinement and ease. It’s not just a classic, it’s contemporary. The car coat’s understated elegance is both versatile and timeless, making it one the best options for navigating the rain or shine in style.
Whether you’re sold on the classic trench or you want to try a chic car coat on for size, here are my top picks.

Barbour The Edit by Alexa Lizzy Showerproof Car Coat
An incredible collaboration from my two all-time favourites. I’m absolutely obsessed with the Lizzy – the wide sleeves and bold pop of colour: this is definitely going straight into my Barbour collection.
Massimodutti Trench Coat With Detachable Scarf Detail
I love the detachable scarf on this trench. It’s so versatile you could pull it off as a headscarf on a rainy day. Plus, the length is perfect for those who aren’t fans of mid-length styles.
Burberry Long Gabardine Car Coat
Wear it with or without the belt; this timeless investment piece will remain a go-to for decades to come.
COS Oversized Voluminous Car Coat
Another captivating take on the car coat featuring raglan sleeves and a voluminous silhouette. COS continues to make timeless pieces irresistibly stylish.
The Row Tavishina Coat in Silk and Cotton
Another timeless investment piece; the cool plaid print is a stunning statement, and it’s versatile enough to be styled as a dress when cinched with a sleek, thin leather belt.
James Smith Pencil Umbrella with Whangee Cane Crook
There’s something super luxurious about a high-quality umbrella. One of the best in the business is The Umbrella Shop in London, a must-visit for umbrella connoisseurs. You’ll never be seduced by a deli display again!
