With the amount of screen time he received on The Bachelorette Season 21—for both good and bad reasons—it makes sense why so many fans would want to know what Devin did for a living before The Bachelorette Season 21 and whether personality type (and tendency to rub others the wrong way) fits with his real-life job.

Devin, a 28-year-old from Rosenburg, Texas, was one of 25 contestants on The Bachelorette Season 21 with Jenn Tran. Though he was a favorite to fans, Devin was far from popular among his fellow Bachelorette Season 21 cast members—including Aaron Erb, Thomas Nguyen, and Sam McKinney—who all feuded with him over what they believed was his lack of respect toward the rest of the cast and for frequently stealing time away from them to talk to Jenn.

With villainization he received from the rest of The Bachelorette Season 21 cast, fans would think that what Devin did for a living before Bachelor Nation debut had to do with something ruthless. But nope! Devin’s job before meeting Jenn was as normal as could be.

How much did Devin make as a contestant on The Bachelorette Season 21?

In what could come as a shock to fans, Bachelor and Bachelorette contestants aren’t paid. Along with not receiving a salary, contestants also pay for their own styling, including their rose ceremony suits and dresses, themselves, which is why many contestants leave The Bachelor and The Bachelorette with significant debt. Many contestants also quit their jobs to be on The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, which can film for as long as three months. “I know that there are women in the past who cashed out their 401(k)s for the show,” TV blogger Dana Weiss told Mic in 2016. “Some have gone into serious credit card debt.”

The Bachelorette airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. on ABC. Stream it on Hulu.
