Where’s Sherri Papini Now After Kidnapping Hoax?

She had a picturesque life, but all of that changed during a strange disappearance. Sherri Papini‘s story is resurfacing after a brand new Hulu documentary series Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini. The show highlights Sherri’s life leading up to the “kidnapping” and her plan to live away from her family.

In 2016, Sherri Papini made headlines after she disappeared on November 2. She reappeared on Thanksgiving day and claimed that she was kidnapped by two Hispanic women while jogging. There were many inconsistencies with the story and it turned out to be a hoax. While she disappeared, Papini was reportedly staying with ex-boyfriend, James Reyes in Costa Mesa, California.

In March 2022, Sherri Papini was arrested on charges of making false statements to federal law enforcement officers and for mail fraud. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months in prison and posted $300,000 in bail in September 2022.

Where is Sherri Papini now?

Sherri Papini was released from prison in August 2023 and moved into a halfway house close by to her ex-husband and their children Tyler and Violet. According to People, she told her children that she became an author during a monitored visitation.

A supervised visitation report from January 17, 2024, stated that she told her daughter, “Well like this place [a supervised visitation center] is very helpful for families, well Mommy is building a foundation to help places like this more. Mommy is making a business that will be a foundation to help people.”

Sherri later asked them, “Do you know what an author is? Mommy’s also an author now. She’s writing two books. I work lots of hours to write chapter books. So, when I tell you I’m working remotely, that means I’m at home writing chapters on my laptop.”

She declined to be in the Hulu documentary series. Her ex-husband Keith Papini is sure that she would tell her side of the story soon. I do believe at some point she will come out and say something,” Keith told TV Insider. “Do I think it’ll be truth? I absolutely do not think it will be the truth. I think it will be another version that she believes sounds the best in her eyes.”

Keith Papini filed for divorce from Sherri shortly after she was sentenced in 2023. His attorneys made a statement: “For over five years, she abused her children and her husband by conning them into believing her lie and then forcing them to live with the fear resulting from their belief in her lie and played on their sympathies. Sherri Papini did not have the moral character to come to her family and confess her wrongdoing, rather she callously allowed them to learn the truth from the media when she admitted her lie in a federal court.”
